Should You Move to Oakville if You Work in Toronto?

In recent years Oakville has attracted a number of relocators from Toronto seeking a quieter, more suburban feel. As a local Oakville real estate agent, one of the questions I hear from buyers all the time is “Should I buy a home in Oakville if I work in Toronto?”.

Oakville may have a unique, down-to-earth energy. However, it’s not so far removed from Toronto that commuting downtown is a major hassle. In fact, Oakville has some of the most commuter-friendly neighbourhoods in the entire GTA. This is true whether you’re heading downtown for work, to one of Toronto’s many colleges or universities, or elsewhere in the city.

In this blog, I’m breaking down everything you should know about moving to Oakville, Ontario if you work, study, or simply love spending time in Toronto. Let’s jump in.

A better way to ask this question is – can you live in Oakville if you work in Toronto? The answer is yes, you absolutely can. On the map, Oakville is around just 35 kilometres from the city centre depending on where you are in town. So it’s not far at all.

That being said, Oakville is so much more than your typical commuter suburb. So while the town’s big-city proximity may be at the top of your priority list, there’s a whole lot more to know and love about Oakville.

How Long Does it Take to Drive to Toronto From Oakville?

By Car

If you prefer to commute by car, getting to Toronto from Oakville will be a breeze. Oakville is located right along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) highway, giving commuters a significant advantage. Depending on traffic levels, travel times can range from 30 to 45 minutes during non-peak hours.

Like anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area, you may face a little bit of traffic on your commute. While traffic congestion during rush hours can be a little longer, the drive is still manageable, especially if you can adjust your schedules to avoid peak periods. However, getting around Oakville locally will be much easier and more efficient.

By Public Transit

One of the main reasons why Oakville is so popular with commuters is the public transit. More specifically, the GO Train. From Oakville GO Station, you can catch a speedy, comfortable train directly into downtown Toronto. Trains run frequently during the week and usually on an hourly basis over the weekend. Once you’ve arrived at Union Station, you’ve got the entire TTC network at your fingertips.

Here’s the best part – Oakville GO to Union Station (by train) takes less than 45 minutes. That’s usually much faster than driving, especially when there’s rush-hour traffic. So you can say goodbye to sitting in gridlock every day just by moving to Oakville.

All that being said, most Oakville residents still keep a car for getting around town and running errands locally. While Oakville does offer local public transportation via bus, it’s not quite as extensive compared to what you’ll find in Toronto.
